Gemma Christina Arterton was born on February 2, 1986, in Gravesend, Kent, England. She attended Gravesend Grammar School for Girls and subsequently studied at North West Kent College, earning A-levels in Drama, English Literature, and General Studies. She then received a grant to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 2007.
Arterton’s professional acting career began shortly before her graduation from RADA. Her first role was in the stage production of Capturing Mary (2007). She then appeared in the film St Trinian’s (2007), marking her feature film debut.
Arterton gained significant recognition for her role as Strawberry Fields in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace (2008). This role led to further opportunities in both independent and mainstream cinema. She starred in The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009), a thriller, and portrayed Io in Clash of the Titans (2010). She also starred in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010).
Arterton continued to work in a variety of genres, including comedy in Tamara Drewe (2010) and horror in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013). She has also returned to the stage, appearing in productions such as The Duchess of Malfi at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (2014), Made in Dagenham (2014) at the Adelphi Theatre, and Nell Gwynn (2016) at the Apollo Theatre.
