Emilia Clarke was born on October 23, 1986, in London, England, and grew up in Berkshire. Her father was a theatre sound engineer, and her mother is a businesswoman. Clarke developed an interest in acting after seeing the musical Show Boat, which her father was working on.
Clarke attended Rye St Antony School and St Edward’s School, Oxford. She then studied at the Drama Centre London, graduating in 2009. Early in her career, she appeared in stage productions and had small roles in television shows, including a guest appearance in the British soap opera Doctors (2009) and the TV movie Triassic Attack (2010).
Clarke’s breakthrough role came in 2011 when she was cast as Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. She replaced Tamzin Merchant, who played the role in the unaired pilot. Game of Thrones became a global phenomenon, and Clarke’s portrayal of Daenerys earned her critical acclaim and numerous awards nominations, including four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
