Emily Jane Browning was born on December 7, 1988, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. She is the daughter of Andrew and Shelley Browning. She attended Eltham High School in Melbourne.
Browning’s acting career began at a young age. She made her debut in the Australian television film The Echo of Thunder (1998) and subsequently appeared in episodes of Australian television series such as High Flyers, Something in the Air, and Blue Heelers. Her early film roles included The Man Who Sued God (2001) and Ghost Ship (2002).
