Catherine Élise Blanchett, known professionally as Cate Blanchett, was born on May 14, 1969, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her mother, June, was a property developer and teacher, and her father, Robert Blanchett, was an American advertising executive. She has an older brother, Bob, and a younger sister, Genevieve. Blanchett attended Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School and Methodist Ladies’ College before studying economics and fine arts at the University of Melbourne. She later dropped out to pursue acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), graduating in 1992.
Blanchett began her acting career in Australian theatre, gaining recognition for her performance in David Mamet’s “Oleanna” in 1992.
