Her father, Harry Chan, was of Chinese descent, and her mother, Patricia (née Tilly), was an actress and former stage actress of Irish and Finnish descent. She has two sisters, Meg Tilly, also an actress, and Rebecca Tilly, and a brother, Steve Tilly. Tilly spent her early childhood in British Columbia, Canada, after her parents divorced. She attended Stephens College in Missouri, where she studied theater.
