Vanessa Nuala Kirby was born on April 18, 1988, in Wimbledon, London, England. She is the daughter of Jane (née Ridley), a magazine editor, and Roger Kirby, a urologist. She attended Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton and took a gap year to travel before studying English at the University of Exeter. During her gap year, she joined a theatre company in South Africa.
Kirby initially declined a place at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) after being offered roles in theatre. Her professional acting career began primarily on stage. She gained recognition for her work in productions at the Octagon Theatre Bolton, including All My Sons (2009), Ghosts (2009), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2010). She continued to perform on stage, including roles at the Royal National Theatre and the Young Vic.
Kirby transitioned to television with roles in series such as The Hour (2011), Great Expectations (2011), Labyrinth (2012), and The Frankenstein Chronicles (2015). She gained significant prominence for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the first two seasons (2016-2017) of the Netflix series The Crown, for which she received critical acclaim and a British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2018.
