Early Life and Education

Carrie Coon was born on January 24, 1981, in Copley, Ohio. She is the daughter of Paula and John Coon. Coon has four siblings: an older brother, an older sister, and two younger brothers. She attended Copley High School and graduated in 1999. Coon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Spanish from Mount Union College in 2003. She then received a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2006.

Early Career and Stage Work

Following graduation, Coon began her acting career primarily on stage. She performed with the Madison Repertory Theatre and American Players Theatre in Wisconsin. She gained significant recognition for her work at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, where she made her debut in 2008 and became a company member. Notable stage credits include “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, for which she won a Theatre World Award and received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play in 2013.
