Sally Cecilia Hawkins was born on April 27, 1976, in Lewisham, London, England. Her parents, Jacqui and Colin Hawkins, are authors and illustrators of children’s books. She was raised in Blackheath, London. Hawkins trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1998.
Hawkins’s career began primarily in theatre and television. Early television roles included appearances in series such as “The Casualty” and “Doctors.” She also performed extensively on stage, including roles in productions at the Royal Court Theatre and the National Theatre.
Hawkins gained wider recognition for her role as Poppy in Mike Leigh’s 2008 film “Happy-Go-Lucky,” for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy and the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival.
