Sidse Babett Knudsen was born on November 22, 1968, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She spent a significant portion of her childhood in Tanzania, East Africa, where her parents worked as volunteers. Knudsen studied drama at the Theatre School at Aarhus Theatre, graduating in 1990.
Knudsen began her acting career primarily in Danish theatre and television. Her breakthrough role came in 1997 with the improvisational comedy film Let’s Get Lost (Lad os være), for which she won both the Robert Award and the Bodil Award for Best Actress.
Knudsen achieved international recognition for her role as Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg in the Danish political drama series Borgen (2010-2013, 2022). Her performance earned her widespread critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination for Best International Actress in 2012.
