Kelly McGillis was born on July 9, 1957, in Newport Beach, California, to Virginia Joan (née Snell), a homemaker, and Donald Manson McGillis, a physician. She is of Scots-Irish, German, and Welsh ancestry. McGillis attended Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California, before moving to New York City to study acting at the Juilliard School’s Drama Division, graduating in 1983.
McGillis began her acting career in the early 1980s. Her early roles included work in television and theatre. She gained prominence with her leading role in the 1985 film Witness alongside Harrison Ford.
