Brit Heyworth Marling was born on August 7, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, to real estate developers John and Heidi Marling. She was raised in Winnetka, Illinois. Marling was valedictorian of her graduating class at North Shore Country Day School. She attended Georgetown University, majoring in economics and studio art. She graduated in 2005. During her time at Georgetown, she worked as an intern at an investment bank but ultimately decided to pursue a career in filmmaking.
After graduating, Marling moved to Los Angeles with friends Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij to pursue filmmaking. She initially worked as an editor and assistant on documentaries. She co-wrote and co-starred in the independent film Boxers and Ballerinas, released in 2004. She also worked on the documentary George Bush: Radical Son.
Marling gained prominence as an actress, writer, and director in independent films. She co-wrote, co-produced, and starred in the science fiction films Sound of My Voice (2011) and Another Earth (2011), both of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Another Earth won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize at Sundance. She co-wrote and starred in The East (2013), directed by Zal Batmanglij, which also premiered at Sundance.
Marling co-created, co-wrote, produced, and starred in the Netflix series The OA, which premiered in 2016. The series received critical acclaim for its unique storytelling and complex themes. It ran for two seasons before being canceled in 2019.
She also starred in films such as Arbitrage (2012) alongside Richard Gere, and The Company You Keep (2012) directed by Robert Redford. More recently, she co-created, co-wrote, executive produced, and starred in the FX series A Murder at the End of the World (2023).
