Tia Carrere was born Althea Rae Janairo on January 2, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her father, Alex Janairo, was a banker, and her mother, Audrey, worked as a computer supervisor. She is of Filipino, Chinese, and Spanish ancestry. Carrere attended Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu.
Carrere began her entertainment career after being discovered in a grocery store. She initially appeared on the television show Star Search in 1985. Her early acting credits include guest appearances on television series such as Airwolf and MacGyver.
Carrere gained widespread recognition for her role as Cassandra Wong in the film Wayne’s World (1992) and its sequel, Wayne’s World 2 (1993). These roles established her as a comedic actress. She went on to star in a variety of films across different genres.
