Kathleen Doyle Bates was born on June 28, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Langdon Doyle Bates, a mechanical engineer, and Bertie Kathleen (née Talbert), a homemaker. She is of English, Scottish, and Scots-Irish ancestry. Bates graduated from White Station High School in 1965 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from Southern Methodist University in 1969, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Early Career

Bates began her acting career on stage, performing in regional theatre and Off-Broadway productions in the 1970s. She made her Broadway debut in 1980 in Goodbye Fidel. Throughout the 1980s, she continued to work extensively in theatre while also taking on minor roles in film and television.
