Jennifer Anne Ehle was born on December 29, 1969, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. She is the daughter of English actress Rosemary Harris and American author John Ehle. Due to her parents’ professions, she spent her childhood in both the United States and the United Kingdom. She attended several boarding schools in England.
Ehle received her formal acting training at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Prior to this, she took a year off from school to travel and study acting.
Ehle’s career began primarily on stage. She gained significant recognition for her performance in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions. One of her most lauded stage roles was as Perdita in The Winter’s Tale (1992), and she also played Ophelia in Hamlet (1993) for the RSC. She won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2000 for her performance in Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing. She also received another Tony Award nomination in 2007 for The Coast of Utopia.
Ehle achieved widespread recognition for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in the 1995 BBC television adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, opposite Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. This role earned her a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress.
