Lena Maria Jonna Olin was born on March 22, 1955, in Stockholm, Sweden. Her father, Stig Olin, was an actor and director, and her mother, Britta Holmberg, was also an actress. Olin studied acting at the Calle Flygare Theatre School and later at the Swedish National Academy of Dramatic Art.
Olin began her acting career in the 1970s, primarily on stage. She was a member of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm for many years, where she performed in numerous productions directed by Ingmar Bergman, among others. Her stage work provided a strong foundation for her subsequent film and television career.
Olin’s international breakthrough came with her role in Ingmar Bergman’s film Fanny and Alexander (1982). She gained further recognition for her performance in The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), directed by Philip Kaufman. She has since appeared in a variety of films, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
