Virginia Elizabeth “Geena” Davis was born on January 21, 1956, in Wareham, Massachusetts. Her mother, Lucille, was a teacher’s assistant, and her father, William F. Davis, was a civil engineer and church deacon. She was raised in a Methodist family. Davis showed an early interest in music, learning piano, flute, and organ. She graduated from Wareham High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama from Boston University in 1979.
After graduating, Davis moved to New York City and initially worked as a window mannequin for Ann Taylor. She signed with the Zoli modeling agency and worked as a model while simultaneously pursuing acting classes. Her acting career began with a role in the 1982 film Tootsie.
