Kyra Minturn Sedgwick was born on August 19, 1965, in New York City. Her mother, Patricia (née Rosenwald), was a speech teacher and educational therapist, and her father, Henry Dwight Sedgwick V, was a venture capitalist. She is of English, German, and Ashkenazi Jewish descent. Sedgwick attended Friends Seminary and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in theater.
Sedgwick began her acting career at age 16 on the soap opera “Another World” in 1982. Her early film roles included appearances in “War and Love” (1985) and “Tai-Pan” (1986). She gained recognition for her performances in films such as “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989) and “Singles” (1992).
