Sophie Nélisse was born on March 27, 2000, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She moved to Montreal, Quebec, with her family at a young age. Before pursuing acting, Nélisse trained as a gymnast, achieving a high level of proficiency. She has a younger sister, Isabelle Nélisse, who is also an actress.
