Kristin Chenoweth was born Kristi Dawn Chenoweth on July 24, 1968, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She was adopted as an infant. Chenoweth began performing gospel music as a child and displayed early vocal talent. She attended Oklahoma City University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre and a master’s degree in opera performance.
Chenoweth’s career began in regional theatre and off-Broadway productions. Her Broadway debut was in the 1997 production of Steel Pier. She gained significant recognition for her role as Sally Brown in the 1999 revival of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, for which she won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
Chenoweth’s performance as Glinda in the original Broadway production of Wicked (2003) cemented her status as a Broadway star. Though she did not win a Tony for Wicked, her performance became iconic. Other notable Broadway credits include Promises, Promises (2010) and On the Twentieth Century (2015), for which she received Tony Award nominations.
Chenoweth has had a successful television career, appearing in numerous shows. She won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Olive Snook in the ABC series Pushing Daisies (2007-2009). Other television credits include Glee, GCB, and guest appearances on shows like The West Wing and Trial & Error.
