Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson (born 5 April 1989), known professionally as Lily James, is a British actress. She was born in Esher, Surrey, England, to Ninette Mantle, an actress, and James Thomson, a musician. She is of English, Scottish, and French descent. James attended Arts Educational School in Tring and later graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London in 2010.
James began her acting career in British television, appearing in episodes of the series Just William (2010) and Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2011). She also had a recurring role in the British drama series Downton Abbey (2012-2015), playing Lady Rose MacClare.
James’s breakthrough role came in 2015 when she starred as the title character in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Cinderella. The film was a critical and commercial success, solidifying her status as a leading actress.
