Early Life and Education

Michaela Ewuraba Boakye-Collinson, known professionally as Michaela Coel, was born on October 1, 1987, in London, England. She is of Ghanaian descent. Coel was raised in East London and attended Catholic schools.

She initially studied English Literature and Theology at the University of Birmingham but left after a year to enroll at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2012.

Career Beginnings and Chewing Gum

Coel began her career performing poetry on the open mic circuit in London. Her play Chewing Gum Dreams, initially her final year project at Guildhall, was performed at The Yard Theatre in Hackney Wick in 2012. It was later adapted into the E4 television series Chewing Gum, which she wrote, starred in, and co-directed.

Chewing Gum aired for two series from 2015 to 2017. The show garnered critical acclaim, earning Coel a BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance in 2016 and a BAFTA for Breakthrough Talent.

Acting Career and Notable Works

Beyond Chewing Gum, Coel has appeared in a variety of television and film roles. She starred in the Netflix musical Been So Long (2018), and had roles in shows such as Black Mirror (“Nosedive”, 2016) and Top Boy (2019).

Her most celebrated work to date is the BBC/HBO series I May Destroy You (2020), which she created, wrote, co-directed, and starred in. The series explores themes of sexual consent, trauma, and identity. I May Destroy You has received widespread critical acclaim and numerous awards, including two Primetime Emmy Awards (Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie) and two British Academy Television Awards (Best Mini-Series and Best Actress).

Coel has also appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
