She graduated from Benowa State High School in 1996 and earned a Bachelor of Performing Arts degree from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 2001.

Torv began her acting career with guest appearances on Australian television series, including “Young Lions” (2002), “White Collar Blue” (2002), and “The Secret Life of Us” (2003). She also had a recurring role in the Australian drama “McLeod’s Daughters” (2003-2004).
