Mary Cathleen Collins, known professionally as Bo Derek, was born on November 20, 1956, in Long Beach, California. Her father, Paul Collins, was a Hobie Cat executive, and her mother, Norma, worked as a beautician. She has three siblings. Derek attended Narbonne High School and later transferred to a private school. She did not complete high school.
Derek’s acting career began in the late 1970s. She gained significant recognition for her role as Jenny Hanley in the 1979 film 10, directed by Blake Edwards. This role catapulted her to international fame. While she continued to act in subsequent years, many of her films received negative reviews. She often starred in films produced or directed by her husband, John Derek.
While critical success was limited, Bo Derek’s cultural impact was notable. Her appearance in 10 helped popularize the cornrow hairstyle, which became briefly fashionable. She received a Golden Globe nomination for New Star of the Year for her performance in 10. She appeared in several other films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including some television roles later in her career.
Beyond acting, Derek has been involved in various business ventures, including a pet care product line. She has also been a political activist, particularly advocating for animal rights and serving on the California Horse Racing Board.
