Emily Erin Deschanel was born on October 11, 1976, in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and actress Mary Jo Deschanel (née Weir). Her younger sister is actress and musician Zooey Deschanel.
Deschanel attended Crossroads School in Santa Monica, California, before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater from Boston University in 1998.
Deschanel began her acting career in the mid-1990s, with early roles in films such as It Could Happen to You (1994) and Rose Red (2002). She gained increasing recognition for her performances in films like Cold Mountain (2003) and The Alamo (2004).
Deschanel is most widely known for her starring role as Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan in the Fox crime procedural drama Bones, which aired for twelve seasons from 2005 to 2017. She also served as a producer for the show, starting in its fourth season, and directed several episodes. Her portrayal of the brilliant, socially awkward forensic anthropologist garnered her significant acclaim and recognition.
Beyond her acting career, Deschanel has demonstrated an interest in animal rights and veganism. She is a board member for Farm Sanctuary.
