Emily Kathleen Anne Mortimer was born on December 1, 1971, in Hammersmith, London, England. Her father was the barrister and writer Sir John Mortimer, creator of the Rumpole of the Bailey series, and her mother is Penelope Gollop. She was educated at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London and subsequently studied Russian at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating with a degree in Russian. During her time at Oxford, she participated in student theatrical productions.
Mortimer began her acting career in the mid-1990s, initially appearing in British television series and short films. Her early roles included appearances in “Sharpe’s Sword” (1995) and “The Ruth Rendell Mysteries” (1996).
