Gemma Chan was born on December 8, 1982, in London, England. Her parents are immigrants from Hong Kong. She was raised in Sevenoaks, Kent, and attended Newstead Wood School for Girls. Chan studied law at New College, Oxford, graduating in 2004. After securing a training contract at a law firm, she chose to pursue an acting career instead, enrolling at the Drama Centre London.
