Swank’s family moved to Bellingham, Washington, when she was six years old. She competed in swimming, gymnastics, and was ranked fifth in the state of Washington for all-around gymnastics. At age nine, she began acting in school plays and community theater. When she was 15, her parents separated, and she and her mother moved to Los Angeles, California, where they lived in a car while Swank pursued her acting career.
