Idina Menzel, born Idina Kim Mentzel on May 30, 1971, in Queens, New York City, is an American actress, singer, and songwriter. She attended Syosset High School on Long Island and later studied drama at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Menzel’s career began on the stage. Her breakthrough role was as Maureen Johnson in the original Broadway cast of Rent in 1996, for which she received a Tony Award nomination. In 2003, she originated the role of Elphaba in the Broadway musical Wicked, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2004.
Other notable stage credits include Hair (off-Broadway revival, 2001), Aida (Broadway, 2000), and If/Then (Broadway, 2014), for which she earned another Tony Award nomination.
Menzel has also appeared in film and television. She reprised her role as Maureen Johnson in the 2005 film adaptation of Rent. She is widely known for voicing Elsa in Disney’s animated film Frozen (2013) and its sequel, Frozen II (2019), performing the Academy Award-winning song “Let It Go.”
Other film credits include Enchanted (2007), Ask the Dust (2006), and Uncut Gems (2019). On television, she had a recurring role as Shelby Corcoran in the musical drama series Glee.
In addition to her acting career, Menzel has a successful music career as a solo artist. She has released several studio albums, including Still I Can’t Be Still (1998), Here (2004), I Stand (2008), Holiday Wishes (2014), and
