Irène Marie Jacob was born on July 15, 1966, in Suresnes, Hauts-de-Seine, France. Her father was a physicist, and her mother was a psychologist. She is of Franco-Polish descent. Jacob was raised in a multilingual environment, fluent in French, English, and German. She moved to Geneva, Switzerland, with her family at the age of three. She attended the Geneva Conservatory of Music and studied acting at the Rue Blanche school in Paris.
