Jane Colburn Levy was born on December 29, 1989, in Los Angeles, California. She was raised in San Anselmo, California. Her mother, Mary, is an artist, and her father, Lester Levy, worked as a mediator. She has English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. Levy attended Sir Francis Drake High School, where she was involved in the hip-hop dancing club and the soccer team. After high school, she briefly attended Goucher College before transferring to the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City.
Levy began her acting career with a recurring role as Mandy Milkovich in the Showtime series Shameless from 2011 to 2012. She gained wider recognition for her starring role as Tessa Altman in the ABC sitcom Suburgatory, which aired from 2011 to 2014.
