Kate Rooney Mara was born on February 27, 1983, in Bedford, New York. Her parents are Kathleen McNulty (née Rooney) and Timothy Christopher Mara. She is the great-granddaughter of both New York Giants founder Tim Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr. Mara comes from a large family, with one older brother, Daniel, one younger sister, actress Rooney Mara, and one younger brother, Conor.
Kate Mara began her acting career with guest appearances in television series such as “Law & Order” (1997), “New York Undercover” (1998), and “Ed” (2000). She made her film debut in “Random Hearts” (1999).
Mara has had recurring and main roles in several notable television series. She played Patricia “Tricia” Morello in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2003), Shira in “Everwood” (2003-2004), and Annie Howard in “Entourage” (2005). She gained considerable recognition for her role as Zoe Barnes in the Netflix political drama “House of Cards” (2013-2014), earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
