Laura Leggett Linney was born on February 5, 1964, in New York City. Her mother, Ann Perse (née Leggett), was a nurse, and her father, Romulus Linney, was a playwright and professor. She graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in 1982. Linney attended Northwestern University before transferring to Brown University, where she studied acting and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She subsequently attended the Juilliard School’s Drama Division as part of Group 19 (1986–1990).
Linney began her professional acting career on stage, appearing in several Broadway and off-Broadway productions. Her early stage roles helped establish her reputation as a versatile and talented actress.
Linney made her film debut with a small role in the 1992 film Lorenzo’s Oil. She gained wider recognition for her performance in the 1993 film Dave. Subsequent roles in films such as Primal Fear (1996) solidified her position in Hollywood.
