Lesley-Ann Brandt was born on December 2, 1981, in Cape Town, South Africa. She is of Cape Coloured descent. She emigrated to Auckland, New Zealand, with her parents and younger brother in 1999. Before pursuing acting professionally, she worked in retail and as an information technology recruitment consultant.
Brandt’s acting career began in New Zealand with appearances in television commercials and small roles in television series. She also studied acting and developed her skills through workshops and classes.
Brandt gained recognition for her role as Naevia in the Starz television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010) and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011). She also reprised the role in Spartacus: Vengeance (2012). This role significantly raised her profile internationally.
Her most prominent and critically acclaimed role is as Mazikeen “Maze” Smith in the Fox/Netflix series Lucifer (2016-2021). She portrayed the demon Maze, Lucifer’s loyal ally and confidante, throughout the show’s entire run. Her performance was widely praised for its complexity, physicality, and emotional depth.
