Lisa Edelstein was born on May 21, 1966, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Alvin and Bonnie Edelstein. Her father was a pediatrician. She is the youngest of three children. She was raised in a Jewish household. Edelstein was a cheerleader in high school and graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in Wayne, New Jersey, in 1984. She studied theater at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Early in her career, Edelstein was known for her presence in the New York City club scene, sometimes being referred to as “Lisa E.” She gained early television experience hosting MTV’s “Awake on the Wild Side” in 1991. She made guest appearances on popular shows like “Seinfeld,” “Mad About You,” and “Wings” during the 1990s.
Edelstein achieved widespread recognition for her portrayal of Dr. Lisa Cuddy, the Dean of Medicine at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, in the medical drama “House.” She was a main cast member from 2004 to 2011, appearing in over 150 episodes. Her performance garnered critical acclaim and earned her a People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Drama Actress in 2011.
Following her departure from “House,” Edelstein continued to work extensively in television. She starred as Abby McCarthy in the Bravo series “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce” from 2014 to 2017. She also had recurring roles in series such as “The Good Wife,” “Elementary,” “Castle,” and “The Kominsky Method.” She voiced Mercy Graves in various DC animated projects, including “Justice League Action” and the DC Animated Movie Universe.
