Maia Mitchell was born on August 18, 1993, in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. She is the daughter of Jill, an educator, and Alex Mitchell, a taxi driver. She has one younger brother, Charlie. Mitchell learned to play guitar at a young age and began performing in local theater productions.
Mitchell began her acting career in Australia. She gained recognition as Brittany Flune in the children’s television series “Mortified” (2006-2007) and later starred as Natasha Hamilton in the teen drama “Trapped” (2008-2009). She also appeared in the Australian television series “K-9” (2009).
Mitchell’s career took a significant turn when she moved to the United States. She made her American television debut in the Disney Channel original movie “Teen Beach Movie” (2013), playing the role of McKenzie. She reprised the role in the sequel, “Teen Beach 2” (2015).
Mitchell is best known for her portrayal of Callie Adams Foster in the Freeform drama series “The Fosters” (2013-2018). Her performance earned her critical acclaim and a Teen Choice Award nomination. Following the success of “The Fosters,” she starred in the spin-off series “Good Trouble” (2019-2022), continuing her role as Callie Adams Foster. She departed “Good Trouble” in 2022 to return to Australia and be closer to her family.
