Ming-Na Wen was born on November 20, 1963, in Coloane, Macau. Her birth name was Ming-Na. She moved to the United States with her mother and stepfather, Soo Lim Yee, settling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She shortened her first name to Ming-Na in elementary school. She attended Mount Lebanon High School and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama.
Ming-Na Wen began her acting career on stage, appearing in productions such as “The Joy Luck Club” before transitioning to television. Her breakthrough role came in 1988 when she was cast as Lien Hughes in the daytime soap opera “As the World Turns,” a role she held until 1991.
Wen gained significant recognition for her role as Chun-Li in the 1994 film adaptation of the video game “Street Fighter.” She achieved further acclaim for voicing the title character in Disney’s animated film “Mulan” (1998) and its sequel, “Mulan II” (2004). She has also provided voice work for numerous animated series and video games.
On television, she is known for her roles as Dr. Jing-Mei “Deb” Chen on the medical drama “ER” (1995-2004), Agent Melinda May in the Marvel television series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” (2013-2020), and Fennec Shand in the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” (2019-present) and “The Book of Boba Fett” (2021-2022). Her portrayal of Fennec Shand has expanded the character’s presence in the Star Wars universe.
