Pernilla August, born Pernilla Augustová on February 13, 1958, in Stockholm, Sweden, is a Swedish actress, director, and screenwriter. She is the daughter of director Lars Augustsson. She initially trained as an actress at the Swedish National Academy of Mime and Acting (Teaterhögskolan) in Stockholm from 1979 to 1982.
August began her professional acting career in the early 1980s. Her early work included stage performances and television roles. She gained international recognition through her collaborations with renowned Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.
Her association with Ingmar Bergman is a significant aspect of her career. She appeared in several of his films, including Fanny and Alexander (1982), After the Rehearsal (1984), and Best Intentions (1992), the latter of which earned her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
August’s career expanded beyond Sweden, with notable roles in international productions. She is widely recognized for her portrayal of Shmi Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002).
In addition to acting, August has also established herself as a director. Her directorial debut was with the short film Blind Date (1996). She directed the feature film Beyond (2010), which was selected as the Swedish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards. She has also directed episodes of television series.
