Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon (born March 22, 1976) is an American actress, producer, and entrepreneur. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to John Witherspoon, a physician, and Betty Reese, a nursing professor. She spent part of her childhood in Wiesbaden, Germany, where her father worked as a military doctor. She was raised in Nashville, Tennessee, and began her acting career as a teenager.
Witherspoon’s acting debut was in 1991 in The Man in the Moon. She gained wider recognition in the mid-1990s with roles in films such as Fear (1996), Pleasantville (1998), and Cruel Intentions (1999). Her breakthrough role came in 2001 with the film Legally Blonde, for which she received a Golden Globe Award nomination.
