Rene Marie Russo was born on February 17, 1954, in Burbank, California. Her father, Nino Russo, was a sculptor and mechanic, and her mother, Shirley (née Balocca), worked in a factory and as a barmaid. Her father left the family when she was two years old. Russo dropped out of high school in the tenth grade due to scoliosis and financial difficulties and began working odd jobs to support her family.
Russo’s career began as a model. She was discovered at a Rolling Stones concert in 1972 by a scout, John Crosby III. She signed with Ford Modeling Agency and became a successful model, appearing on the covers of Vogue and Cosmopolitan. She left modeling in the late 1980s.
Russo transitioned to acting in the late 1980s. She started with television roles, including the short-lived series “Sable” (1987-1988). Her film debut was in “Major League” (1989).
