Ruth Wilson was born on January 13, 1982, in Ashford, Surrey, England. She is the daughter of Nigel Wilson, a banker, and Mary, a probation officer. She has three older brothers. Wilson attended Notre Dame School, an independent Roman Catholic school for girls, and Esher College. She graduated with a degree in History from the University of Nottingham in 2003. She trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), graduating in 2005.

She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama for her role as Alison Lockhart in the Showtime drama series The Affair (2014-2018).
Wilson has also had a successful stage career. She won two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Actress: one for her performance as Stella Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire (2010) and another for her performance in Hedda Gabler (2017) at the National Theatre.
In 2024, she starred as Gertrude Bell in the play “The Second Woman” at the Young Vic Theatre, London.
