Sally Kirkland was born on October 31, 1941, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her mother, Sally Kirkland (née Senter), was a fashion editor at Vogue and Life magazines. Kirkland attended high school in New York City and briefly studied at Vassar College before pursuing acting.
Kirkland began her acting career in the 1960s with Off-Broadway and experimental theater productions. She was a member of Andy Warhol’s Factory, appearing in several of Warhol’s films. She became a life member of The Actors Studio.
Kirkland transitioned into film and television, initially taking on smaller roles in various projects. She gained recognition for her commitment to independent cinema and her willingness to take on challenging and unconventional roles. She has appeared in over 200 films and television roles.
Kirkland’s breakthrough role came in 1987 with the film Anna, which she co-wrote and starred in. Her performance as a struggling Czech actress in New York City earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
