Selma Blair Beitner was born on June 23, 1972, in Southfield, Michigan, to Molly Ann (née Cooke), a judge, and Elliot I. Beitner, an attorney. She was raised in a Jewish household. Blair attended Cranbrook Kingswood School and later Kalamazoo College before moving to New York City to pursue acting. She studied at the Stella Adler Conservatory and the Stonestreet Screen Acting Workshop at New York University.
