Sherri M. Saum was born on October 1, 1974, in Dayton, Ohio. She is of German and African American descent. Saum attended Ohio State University before moving to New York City to pursue her acting career.
Saum began her acting career in daytime television. Her first major role was as Vanessa Hart on the NBC soap opera Sunset Beach, which she portrayed from 1997 to 1999. Following Sunset Beach, she had a recurring role on Showtime’s Beggars and Choosers.
Saum has had a prolific television career, appearing in numerous series. She starred as Natalie Hurley in the critically acclaimed but short-lived ABC drama Rescue Me from 2004 to 2011. She also had recurring roles in series such as In Treatment, Gossip Girl, and The Fosters. Her role as Lena Adams Foster in The Fosters (2013-2018) and its spin-off, Good Trouble (2019-2024), garnered significant recognition.
While primarily known for her television work, Saum has also appeared in several films. Her film roles include appearances in Girlfriends’ Getaway (2014),
