Sibel Kekilli was born on June 16, 1980, in Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She is of Turkish descent, her parents having immigrated to Germany from Turkey in 1977. Before pursuing acting, she worked in various jobs, including as a cleaning lady and a nightclub promoter.
Kekilli’s acting career began unexpectedly when she was discovered by a casting director in a shopping mall. She made her debut in the controversial 2004 film Head-On (Gegen die Wand), directed by Fatih Akin. Her performance garnered critical acclaim and won her the German Film Award for Best Actress.
Following Head-On, Kekilli continued to work in both German and international productions. One of her most significant roles was as Shae in the HBO television series Game of Thrones (2011-2014). Her portrayal of Shae earned her international recognition and widespread praise.
