Vanessa Anne Hudgens was born on December 14, 1988, in Salinas, California. Her mother, Gina Guangco, is of Filipino, Spanish, and Chinese descent, and her father, Gregory Hudgens, was of Irish and Native American ancestry. She was raised in San Diego, California, and has a younger sister, Stella Hudgens. Hudgens was homeschooled during her later years.
Hudgens began her acting career in musical theatre, appearing in productions such as The Wizard of Oz, The King and I, and Cinderella. She transitioned to television, appearing in episodes of Quintuplets (2004) and The Brothers Garcia (2002). Her breakthrough role came in 2006 with the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical.
Hudgens gained international recognition for her portrayal of Gabriella Montez in High School Musical (2006), High School Musical 2 (2007), and High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008). The franchise was a commercial success and solidified her status as a teen idol. Her performances in the films’ soundtracks also achieved platinum status.
Following the success of High School Musical, Hudgens diversified her acting roles.
